Collection of sheet music reflecting support for the Southern cause during the Civil War era, mainly published in southern or border state cities under U.S. military occupation between 1861 and 1865, particularly Baltimore, Louisville, Nashville, and New Orleans (A.E. Blackmar), but also including Boston, New York, St. Louis, and London, England. The collection is organized alphabetically by title within each box. Collection consists of patriotic, sentimental, inspirational, commemorative and memorial music (and often lyrics) for songs, hymns, anthems, marches, and dances (polka, schottisch). Themes and subjects include: Patriotism and the Confederacy (Confederacy march, Bonnie blue flag); military leaders (Beauregard's march, Stonewall quick step); Confederate troops (Volunteer waltz, Washington Artillery polka march); loved ones at home (Do they think of me at home?, Laura polka, Popping the question); African Americans (Contraband schottisch, Poor oppressed); and Southern defeat (The conquered banner, The faded gray jacket). Notable composers include Théodor von La Hache, Charles Young, and Harry Macarthy. Some sheet music covers are illustrated with lithograph portraits or engraved caricatures or scenes, and many have decorated borders.
